Important Factors to Consider when Choosing a Tree for Your Property

Installing new trees on your property can add beauty and improve curb appeal. But before you run out and purchase a tree for your yard, there are some important factors to weigh, such as how much direct sunlight your yard gets and what type of soil you have. It’s also very important to consider the tree’s maximum size so that years down the road, you don’t have to continuously cut it back or remove it. At Jireh Tree Care, we can make recommendations for which types of trees to choose for your property. We also offer comprehensive tree care in the greater Fort Lauderdale area. Here’s a look at four things to think about when selecting a tree for your property.

Watering Needs

While some trees are more drought tolerant, others require regular watering. If you’re interested in a tree that’ll require frequent watering before it becomes well-established, then you’ll want to be realistic about whether you have the time to keep it hydrated. By putting in an automatic irrigation system with a timer, such a chore will be much easier. And it’s important to keep in mind that your tree’s root ball should remain damp while transplanting it so that the tree doesn’t become overly stressed.

Mature Size

Trees at the nursery are usually rather small, but don’t let this fool you. It’s very important to check the tag for the tree’s maximum height and width so that you don’t end up with a tree that is growing into power lines or up against your home.

Soil Type

You’ll want to check the tree’s soil preferences and then see if they align with what you have on your property. Important soil factors include drainage and whether it is more acidic or alkaline, which can be determined by conducting a pH test.

Sunlight Requirements

A lot of tree species need full sun, which is at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. However, there are many options for more shady locations as well. Our local arborist crew can help you with determining which trees will work best for how much sunlight your location gets.
